Week 10 Part A: Researching Email Marketing

For this assignment I had to consider newsletters for my business. When I thought of my experience with newsletters from other businesses I didn't want anything to do with making them for my own business. The only newsletters I get from businesses are through email, and any time I get one I delete it or unsubscribe because I didn't want to be receiving them in the first place. The first business I thought of was Ulta. I get an email from them every. single. day. I do not want that junk in my email. They send out emails detailing new products or deals where you have to spend $75 to save $5....so you're taking away the tax and I end up spending $75 anyway? Quite a pet peeve of mine. The daily emails come in and I don't even read them, so I definitely would not send out a newsletter daily.

A business I receive letters from weekly is Planet Fitness. Now this one just makes me feel guilty because I haven't been there in three months. But those deals in the newsletter look real nice sometimes! They tell you about the deal of 20% off Crocs and other discounts. Now I haven't worn Crocs since I was 5 but the deal makes me want to put them ugly things right back on. Maybe I'd even buy some gems for them too. Besides the guilt of not going to the gym, I don't mind the weekly newsletters from Planet Fitness. I'm not sure if I would have enough to say for a weekly newsletter, but I also think a weekly newsletter keeps the business in your mind without being overbearing.

For my business I think I would send out a weekly newsletter. In the newsletter I think I would give a quick rundown of the episode coming out for the week. I couldn't really do promotions for the business because following a podcast on Spotify is free, and the only money aspect would be if listeners followed us on Patreon. I could also have photos of the music artists that we'll feature for the week. It would be a little difficult to find the balance between text and photos, but I know that it could be done. Not too much text that makes the reader uninterested, and not too many photos to distract the reader from even looking at the text. I think this type of newsletter would work for my target audience because it gives them a little sneak peak that makes them excited for the episode to come out during the week.

I just signed up for the Crime Junkie Podcast newsletter, but I haven't gotten any of the newsletters yet, so I'll have to come back to this when they send of the first newsletter. Overall, I'm not the biggest fan of newsletters in general because I just think that they crowd up my inbox, but I can see how they could work for a business.

Comments

  1. Oh my gosh, yes I get Ulta newsletters too and I find them very annoying- "non" sales. I love your idea to have photos of the musical artists you're going to feature! Maybe one week you could also do like a teaser interview or something.. like "2 questions with XXX band name". (Megan McDonell of North County Fam)

  2. I like your approach, instead of doing it like other businesses you are showcasing things and showing things that fans of yours would want to see instead of trying to sell them stuff. I think you could also introduce a guest if you have one for that episode. That way, people who have heard of the guest will be more excited and will be more likely to listen to the episode.

  3. Those ulta emails are annoying. No matter how many times I unsubscribe I keep getting them. For your podcast, I'd suggest a local artist as a guest. Perhaps self-promoting their new album or craft.

  4. Hey Sarah! I love your idea about sending weekly emails reminding listeners to check out your latest episode. I agree that giving a sneak peak will be a successful way to hook them into checking out the entire piece of work. I would recommend also doing newsletters about your process in creating the episodes, maybe talk about what inspired each one so the audience feels closer to the subject and understand why its important to you.
