Week 9 Part A: Personal Touch in Business Communications
I think it's always nice to add a personal touch to a post from a business - especially in today's world. A lot of businesses are so focused on promoting their products or services that they lose sight of the people that they are selling their business to. I've always appreciated a nice pun or joke with products that I buy. Granted, not every business needs to involve humor in their business promotions. A personal touch can be added into any business promotion, but I think the type of personal touch is important.
A medical product promotion most likely shouldn't utilize humor to make a person feel connected. An expression of a company's dedication to helping a person in whatever medical situation they find themselves in could be a nice sense of reassurance for the potential buyer. A coffee shop could share something relatable about not being able to wake up in the morning without a cup of coffee. Political campaigns use a personal touch all the time in an attempt to sway viewers into supporting a particular candidate. I just saw a political ad last night promoting a woman for governor or some other position, and the ad stated that the woman is the only candidate in California that supports pro-choice. Now, this is definitely a hyperbole, but the point being made was that this woman is the only candidate who will support viewers who have the same outlook. Fast food restaurants add a personal touch in the sense that they understand that sometimes you don't have the time to make a whole meal or you just don't feel like it. They also add an appeal on their prices by telling viewers that they don't need to be dropping big bucks to get a meal that they'll enjoy. Every business uses a slightly different method, but they do in fact use a personal touch.
For my business I believe that any post could have a personal touch to it. Being a host of a podcast, the whole point of the business is to have a personal connection with potential listeners. The posts that I have made on Instagram and Facebook all invite the viewers to chime in with favorite music genres, conversation topics they would like to hear, etc.. Beyond this, I think it might be nice to add some humor into the posts. I'm not the best at coming up with puns or funny captions, but I know that it would be a nice touch to the tone of my posts. Being able to show our sense of humor in a promotional post would demonstrate to the viewers that we are not vert serious people and that we are just trying to have fun, and share that fun with other people.
I touched on a couple of different businesses and the type of personal touch that they could use to promote their products or services. I really do believe that any business can utilize this tactic to bring in more customers, but once again, the type of personal touch is really important. Part of the blog post criteria questioned if there are any businesses that should not use this marketing tactic to reach out and connect with consumers. Honestly, I cannot think of a single business that shouldn't use this method as a form of connection with their customers. If used properly, a personal touch is truly a great marketing technique that can bring in and maintain a steady flow of customers.
